Big Girl Room

Somehow my baby girl is big enough to need in her words "a big girl bed!!!" How is that even possible?!?

We left her in her crib as long as possible. She's been happy and sleeping well in her crib and she hasn't tried to escape from it yet (some of our prerequisites for transitioning to a bed).

Here's the board that I put together for her when I designed her nursery three years ago.  The inspiration for her room came from the fabric that my Mom and I picked out for her quilt; the same way the inspiration came for my son's room a few years prior and the same way my niece's room came together.

Paint is Benjamin Moore Billowy Down 2064-70. Fabric came from a local fabric store. Crib and dresser were for inspiration purposes - I knew I wanted white furniture.  Art was from Etsy. Mobile is from Etsy. Monogram came from Etsy.  Rug is from Dash and Albert. Harper Roman Shade is from Pottery Barn Kids. Flush mount light is from Shades of Light.

The beautiful pinwheel quilt. My Mom's handy work. Thank you Nana!

When she was 10 months old we moved (more on that some other time) and I transitioned what we had in her nursery at Big Red (our old home) into the House on the Hill (our new home).  Her room at Big Red was SMALL I'm talking the size of a master closet in some homes and a twin bed was never going to fit; hence the move.

Here's a shot of her room when Big Red went on the market:

I wasn't kidding when I said it was small.

Here are some shots of her room as it stands now:

Dresser is from a local furniture store that painted it a glossy white for us and the knobs came from Anthropologie. Chair and Lamp is IKEA. Valances are from Pottery Barn Kids. Pouf and Mirror were Home Goods finds. Vases were a wedding shower gift from Crate and Barrel years ago. The blanket and dog pillow are both handmade gifts from family friends. Artwork is from her big brother.

Yes, all of our bedrooms have ceiling fans. I'm learning to embrace them.

Curtains/Closet Doors are from Country Curtains. The ribbon and fabric was all sewn on by my very talented Mom with scraps from the quilt. Rug is from Dash and Albert (as yes, it's too small) Shelves are from IKEA. Happiness sign was a gift and the boot artwork is from Yorktown, VA artist Nancy Thomas

You can see that I used her inspiration board as a template. Some of the things made it into the room while others were discarded for objects or finishes that worked better. The flush mount light fixture is in her closet which was painted pink thank you Sherry from Young House Love for the inspiration.

My little lady was hiding in her closet as I was taking pictures. The mobile will be moved from over her crib and either put into her closet or over her reading chair.

Now as I sit and develop her big girl room I would like her space to be one that she'll grow with not grow out of.  I see a lot of things remaining - the same since she had a nursery full of color and not "baby" things.  The paint, window treatments, dresser, chair and some of the decor will stay.  She's going to get a big girl bed, which happens to be a family heirloom that we'll sand and repaint.  It's a piece of furniture that is very special to me. It's a bed that my grandmother slept in as a child, my Mom slept in as a child and so did I.

Oh and it's a twin. I'm going against a lot of what you might be seeing for kids rooms these days but I know she's going to be just fine.

Two options for her room:

Comforter and pillows are a combination from Pottery Barn Kids/Pottery Barn Teen/Etsy.  The raindrop wall decals are from Leen the Graphics Queen and mimic her mobile. Hook is from Anthropologie. Shelving from IKEA.

This option has a painted bed with a white comforter. Comforter from Target.

Even though she's just three, she's been part of the design process like any client. I'd show her a couple of options that I thought would work for the room and let her help make selections.

We'll be updating this post as we decide which way to go with the room and start to make the changes. Which would you choose?
